COBOL Mainframe Developer

Location: Chester (Hybrid - 3 days on-site)
Employment Type: Permanent.
Salary: Up to £55,000 per annum.
Start Date: Urgent - early October.

An experienced Mainframe Developer is required to join a growing engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining scalable mainframe applications. The role involves working with COBOL, IMS, z/OS, and particularly IBM DB2 for database management and optimisation.

This is an opportunity to work on one of the largest mainframe installations globally, supporting a critical payments platform with decades of proven stability. This is a long-term role with system longevity and consistent development opportunities.

The position includes handling remediation work, integrating new payment streams into global banking systems, and supporting a mission-critical legacy payments platform. The role

The role also requires troubleshooting production issues, implementing enhancements, and ensuring long-term system stability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL, IMS, and z/OS.
  • Manage and optimize IBM DB2 databases, ensuring high performance and reliability.
  • Provide production support, bug fixes, and enhancements for legacy payment systems.
  • Contribute to remediation projects and the onboarding of new payment streams into global banking platforms.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and adhere to SDLC best practices, including requirements gathering, standards compliance, and collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Work closely with both onshore and offshore teams to deliver stable and scalable solutions.


Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Mainframe Developer, currently hands-on in COBOL and DB2.
  • Strong technical expertise in IBM DB2, COBOL, IMS, and z/OS.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of SDLC and Agile delivery practices.
  • Ability to clearly articulate technical standards, requirements, and processes.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work across technical and business teams.
