Senior High-Performance Computing (HPC) IT Support Specialist

Location: Llandudno, Wales, United Kingdom

Our client, a global leader in geoscience technology, is seeking an experienced Senior HPC IT Support Specialist to join their dynamic team in Llandudno. In this role, you'll play a pivotal part in providing senior-level applications support for their data centers. Your responsibilities will span from installing and configuring applications to troubleshooting issues, both for internal and third-party applications and databases in Linux and Windows environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Comprehensive Support: Provide advanced support for Windows applications, demonstrate strong knowledge of Active Directory, and handle Windows Server installation and administration.

  • Diverse Technical Expertise: Gain hands-on experience in Linux installation and administration, exhibit proficiency in virtualization technologies (preferably Nutanix), and showcase extensive database installation and administration skills.

  • Networking Acumen: Demonstrate an excellent understanding of IP networking, DNS, DHCP, and firewalling concepts.

  • Infrastructure Maintenance: Utilize your hardware maintenance expertise for servers, storage, CPUs, and ensure a deep understanding of data backup concepts.

  • Project Management: Manage project deadlines effectively, applying your experience with Agile project management.

  • Problem Solving: Exhibit strong problem-solving skills with a methodical approach to your work, fostering an enthusiastic attitude towards learning.

  • Collaborative Leadership: As a Senior IT Support Specialist, lead the innovation and development of new technologies, mentor team members, and contribute to the automation and analysis of problem resolution.

Qualifications and Skills:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or related computing subjects.

  • 5 years of experience in high-performance computing (HPC) or data center environments.

  • Extensive support skills for Windows applications, strong knowledge of Active Directory, and Windows Server installation and administration.

  • Experience with Microsoft SCCM packaging, hands-on experience with Linux installation and administration.

  • Good knowledge of virtualization technologies and solutions, with Nutanix experience preferred.

  • Extensive experience with database installation and administration.

  • Excellent understanding of IP networking, DNS, DHCP, and firewalling concepts.

  • Hardware maintenance experience (servers, storage, CPUs), understanding of data backup concepts.

  • Experience with Agile project management, strong problem-solving skills, and a methodical approach to work.

  • Enthusiastic attitude towards learning and flexibility to adapt to new challenges or changes in direction.

  • Ability to define and manage project deadlines, excellent communication skills.

Desired:

  • Scripting and automation skills (Windows and/or Linux).

  • Cloud administration experience.

  • ITIL Foundation level certification.

  • Knowledge of one or more of the following: Ansible, OpenStack, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Docker, etc.
