What you can learn from interview rejection.

After an interview, the wait for feedback from your interviewer or Recruiter can feel like a lifetime. 

Finally, that call or email you’ve been waiting for. 

They’ve decided not to proceed any further with your process. You prepared, you thought it went well, and now you’re frustrated. 

If a rejection email or call does come your way, here are a few things to remember to help you in your next interview. 

1.    Review and reflect
Your initial reaction will probably be one of disappointment and you’ll feel discouraged. But the way you handle rejection is equally as important as the skills on your CV.  

Use your interview as a guide to help you improve for next time – ask yourself the question ‘did I prepare enough?’ and be honest in your answer. If the answer is no, for your next interview make sure you properly research a company and the role. You can never be overprepared. 

If this was a second, or third stage interview think about each stage and see where you could’ve improved. What went well? What could you have done differently? Did you focus on technical abilities too much? Did you showcase your soft skills? 
Each interview will help you to improve, so use each process as an opportunity to grow. 

2. A rejection isn't feedback
If you’ve been rejected from an interview process, yet you’re not sure where it went wrong ask for feedback. 

Reach out to your Recruiter or interviewer and ask for detailed feedback to help you. You may be embarrassed to ask– but don’t. This happens to people daily.

You’re not the first person to be rejected from an interview and you won’t be the last – so call or email your Recruiter or interviewer and ask for feedback. 

3. It's not personal
No matter how hard we tell ourselves that it’s not personal, it’s hard not to take rejection to heart. An interviewer can only pick one person, if you put your professional ability to one side think about whether you would’ve been a good culture fit? For this role, someone else may have been a better cultural fit.

Your rejection may have nothing to do with the way you interview, it may be that you’re applying for the wrong roles. Really think about the role you want and the company you’d like to work for. This will help you refine your search and you’ll find it easier to find your dream job. 

4. Keep learning and progressing 
As much as this may feel counterintuitive, think about the negatives from your interview as these are the things you can learn from. Think about that interview question that surprised you, and how you could’ve answered this differently. 

Maybe the interviewer asked you about new software, or a new tech trend that you weren’t aware of – read the latest news and keep up to date with your niche. Continuously learning and seeking improvement will only make you a stronger candidate.
